The Journey Continues!

A very happy new year to you all. I hope that 2020 will be a good year for you.

We hope to make it a very happy year for one particular family, but as yet we still don’t know who this will be. The journey so far has been full of unknowns, the only certainty being our desire and commitment to re-settle a family who have found themselves refugees as a result of the war in Syria in Llantwit.

So, what stands between us and our goal? It is probably the biggest challenge we have faced so far, it is our need of suitable accommodation. Simply, we need a house!

Just before Christmas the Home Office gave us their approval to enable us to move forward, this means we now need to identify a property and put in our final submission. The house needs to have a minimum of three bedrooms, but could have more. The size of the house and it’s rooms will be what determines the size of family we are offered.

Once we have found a property and it has been approved by the Home Office, we will be offered a family. Once we have accepted it will take 8-12 weeks for the family to arrive, hopefully at Cardiff Airport. This will be an exciting time for us and for the family; but with the excitement will come huge challenges on both sides. Llantwit Major will represent a place of safety for this family, but it will also be a huge culture shock. This is not a journey they had ever wanted to make, or a place they would have chosen had circumstances been different; but such is the place they have found themselves in, now all they want is to make a life for their family in a safe place with people who want them and will offer support and friendship. A place where they can begin to recover and find their identity in this strange land; where they can learn the language and the culture, and in turn teach us something of theirs. It will be a shared journey which will have it’s ups and it’s downs, but it will be one we make together that will enrich us all.
